EVER STOPPED MID-COFFEE sip and thought, Why do I do the things I do? Maybe it’s the caffeine talking, but the truth is, we’re all chasing something: connection, achievement, freedom, or just the last slice of pizza at the party. At the core of it all are our fundamental human needs—the unsung heroes driving everything from your endless to-do list to your Saturday Netflix binge.
A while back, I hit a wall. On the surface, life seemed peachy, but underneath, something was…off. It wasn’t the usual suspects (work stress, too many emails). Nope, it was deeper. Turns out, I’d been neglecting one of the big ones—the need for connection. I was so busy “hustling” that my relationships got shoved to the back burner, reheated occasionally like sad leftovers. Finally, I reprioritized, diving back into shared meals, long talks, and cheesy laughs. The result? I felt whole again.
This got me thinking about the framework of human needs. Spoiler alert: these needs are the puppeteers of our lives, pulling the strings whether we know it or not.
The Core Human Needs
Experts love to slice and dice our needs into neat categories, so here’s a cheat sheet on the big ones—and how they play out in everyday life:
Connection
Humans = social creatures. We crave love, belonging, and someone to argue with over what to order for dinner. Whether you're a community-builder or just really into hosting game nights, connection fuels our souls.
How to thrive:
- Join a group where people geek out about the same weird things you do.
- Actually make time for those “let’s catch up soon” texts.
Security
Call it whatever you want: stability, safety, peace of mind. Security is what keeps us sane—whether it’s about having a roof over your head or knowing your bestie’s got your back, no matter what.
How to thrive:
- Create a budget that doesn’t send you into a cold sweat.
- Establish routines that make life feel less like chaos and more like jazz.
Growth and Achievement
You know that friend who’s always talking about their “next big thing”? That’s the need for growth in action. It’s about pushing boundaries, challenging yourself, and proving to the world (or just your cat) that you’ve got this.
How to thrive:
- Set goals worth bragging about—but don’t forget to enjoy the ride.
- Learn something new. Bonus points if it makes you sound cooler at parties.
Variety
Ah, variety—the itch to explore, break the rules, and do things your way. This fun need drives adventurers, rebels, and people who refuse to follow the IKEA instructions.
How to thrive:
- Travel somewhere that blows your mind (and your Instagram feed).
- Create something that screams, “This is me!”—be it art, writing, or a TikTok dance.
Purpose
Few things hit harder than knowing your life has meaning. Whether you’re saving the whales, mentoring kids, or just trying to make the best lasagna ever, purpose gives us that warm, fuzzy “I’m making a difference” feeling.
How to thrive:
- Volunteer for something you care about. Bonus: you’ll meet cool people.
- Start a passion project, no matter how ridiculous it seems.
Living in Alignment with Your Needs
Here’s the kicker: we don’t always meet our needs in ways that actually fulfill us. Scrolling mindlessly doesn’t equal connection. Hustling 24/7 isn’t real growth. And chasing money for the sake of it? Yawn. The question is, "Am I meeting my needs in ways that energize me or just distract me?"
Take my friend Daniella—an ambitious go-getter who looked like she had it all: clients, awards, LinkedIn clout. Behind the scenes though? Burnout central. She’d been chasing achievement so hard, she forgot about her need for rest. When she finally allowed herself to slow down—reading novels, going for walks—she discovered a joy that fueled her success even more. Who knew, right?
Reflect on Your Own Needs
So, what about you? Are your needs being met, or are you running on empty? Maybe it’s time to shake things up—small shifts can lead to big changes.
Here’s something to think about: Which need has the biggest influence on your life right now, and are you nurturing it in a way that truly fulfills you?
Wishing you alignment, inspiration, and maybe even some pizza,
Until next time,
